Brief
Our research team conducted contextual research on the ideal experience of sleep in collaboration with leading Lextant, a human-centered research consultancy based in the USA. We focused on rising sleeping concerns among people by conducting a variety of research methods such as Lextant's sensory que, cultural probes, field interviews, and observations. We come up with a framework that illustrates what the ideal experience of sleep feels like.
Challenge
Rising Concerns About Sleep Persist Despite Extensive Research
Despite a lot of research has been done and ongoing on why people have difficulty to sleep but still rising concerns about sleep have become increasingly prominent.
Respond
Our contextual research explored ideal sleep experiences to uncover personalized preferences

Impact
Developed two frameworks:
01 Mental & Emotional
Based on our research studies, we found that mental and emotional health play a significant role in the quality of sleep. These findings reflects desires of our participant to maintain mental and emotional well-being for a better sleeping experience.
02 Physical & Environment
Our research findings indicate that physical and environmental conditions significantly influence the quality of sleep. Our research participants expressed their desire to have better light conditions to set their moods to prepare for sleep. Participants expressed their desire to be free from worries before going to bed.

Research Goal
Rising Concerns About Sleep Persist Despite Extensive Research
We would like to learn about how people would like to sleep rather than focus on why people won't get sleep? This contextual research will open deep rooted desire to sleep: the ideal experience of sleep.

01.
Understand ideal experience of sleep
02.
Understand needs and motivations

Cultural Probe
Cultural probes are a research technique used in contextual research to gather rich, multi-faceted data about users’ lives and experiences.
This approach is particularly valuable when dealing with sensitive topics or when participants might struggle to articulate their feelings verbally.

Sensory Que
Lextant’s Sensory Cue Research™ is a unique approach to contextual research that focuses on the sensory aspects of user experiences to generate valuable insights and guide design decisions.

Affinitization

An Affinity Wall is a tool used in research to organize and categorize large amounts of data. The process involves gathering data, identifying ideas, sorting these ideas into groups based on their similarities, and creating categories for each group. This method is particularly useful in the strategic phases of the design lifecycle, helping to distill a lot of information into key insights.
